General view of the train shed, depicting where continuous glass reaches the transverse band of glass which stretches along the train shed; Michelucci's first major work was S Maria Novella Railway Station (1933-1935; with N. Baroni, P. N. Berardi, S. Guarnieri, L. Lusanna and I. Gamberini) [collectively known as Gruppo Toscano], Florence, one of the outstanding monuments of modern Italian architecture. Situated next to S Maria Novella, it used traditional materials such as pietra forte and kept an understated profile. Through its great glazed entrance hall, open at both ends, it related both visually and spatially to the surrounding urban fabric. The interior furnishings are also in rich materials with careful detailing (two murals by Ottone Rosai survive). Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.groveart.com/ (accessed 2/9/2008)
