Description
Close-up of torso and head of St. Matthew; Three out of five of the altarpieces that he delivered between 1602 and 1606 were either rejected outright or soon taken down including St Matthew and the Angel, commissioned on 7 February 1602 to complete his work on the Contarelli Chapel (ex-Kaiser-Friedrich Mus., Berlin, destr. 1945; see Cinotti, 1991, pl. 40) and for which Caravaggio made a replacement (1602-1603; in situ).
