| dc.description | Frontal view of the front elevation, depicting the left portal and window; "S Giacomo degli Spagnoli, now called Nostra Signora del Sacro Cuore, on Piazza Navona in Rome. This was founded in 1450 by Bishop Alfonso Paradinas of Seville (d 1485) and was the first church built in Rome after the papacy left Avignon and returned to Rome." Starting from 1506 the church was the national church of the Spanish nation in Rome. When Santa Maria in Monserrato degli Spagnoli was completed in the 17th century, the focus of the Spanish community shifted to that church, which is now the Spanish national church. Pope Leo XIII had the edifice, which was on the verge of crumbling down, extensively renovated in the late 19th century. At the time the main entrance was moved to face Piazza Navona. The apse and the transept were demolished in 1938 to open the current Corso del Rinascimento avenue. Pietro Torrigiani is documented as having done sculptural works in the church including marble doorways (1499-1500) which are now on the Piazza Navona façade.
