Description
View down the nave (by Rosato Rosati, 1611); [The attribute ai Catinari refers to the presence, at the time of its construction, of many dishmaker shops in the same street of the church. The church was commissioned by the Order of the Barnabites and funded by the Milanese community in Rome to honour their fellow Milanese San Carlo Borromeo (in English, St. Charles Borromeo).] Rosati was engaged by the Barnabites to work on the design of their new church, S Carlo ai Catinari. Construction began in 1612 and was completed up to the lantern by 1620. The choir, however, dates from a later campaign (1638-1646), as does the façade (1636-1638) by Giovanni Battista Soria. The plan is an elongated Greek cross with a central cupola and four corner chapels. Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.oxfordartonline.com/ (accessed 7/12/2008)
