Frontal view of the apse; "Sansovino also gained the commission to rebuild the Servite church of S Marcello in Rome after a fire in 1519, probably helped by his Florentine connections and by his friend and patron Cardinal Antonio de' Monte (d 1533), who was protector of the Servite order. Although Sangallo replaced him in this project as well, perhaps as early as 1521, Sansovino made one very significant contribution to the new church: he reversed its orientation to face the present-day Via del Corso rather than SS Apostoli. This showed a sensitivity to urban planning, which became a notable feature of Sansovino's Venetian career." [The facade, completed 1683 is by Carlo Fontana.] Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.groveart.com/ (accessed 1/18/2008)
