Description
View looking up at altar, with altarpiece S. Cecilia, by Antonio Gherardi; The remainder of Gherardi's career as a painter is marked by this classicizing restraint, often dependent on Bolognese sources. For example, his St Cecilia (1689-1690) in a chapel that he himself designed in the church of S Carlo ai Catinari, still has elements of colour and execution reminiscent of Veronese, but its general conception is based on a Coronation of the Virgin (1607; London, N.G.) by Guido Reni.
