Distant view over what was the site of Ancient Sparta; There are two contemporary sites known as 'Sparta'; modern Menalaion, located three miles from Spárti; was possibly the site of Homeric Sparta, since Menalaion was clearly the site of a major settlement contemporary with Homer's tale, and there are fewer contemporary remains at Spárti.
