Detail of the right side showing athlete above the head of Quetzalcóatl; The Olympic Stadium (renamed in 1968) was constructed in 1952 and hosted the Olympic Games in 1968. On the eastern wall of the stadium is a pebble mosaic done in stones of natural colors by Rivera called "The university, the family and the sport in México". Under the University shield which features the eagle and condor stands the family; two athletes flank this and the plumed serpent of Quetzalcóatl runs underneath. Diego Rivera had planned to cover the entire outside of the stadium with similar mosaics, but the project ended with his death in 1957.
