General view of casino and garden; [The Monte Carlo Casino is one of the most famous tourist attractions of Monaco. The casino complex is a gambling facility which also includes the Grand Théâtre de Monte Carlo, an opera and ballet house, and the headquarters of the Ballets de Monte Carlo. It is situated in the Monte Carlo quarter, although the citizens of Monaco are forbidden to enter the gaming rooms.] Also notable is the magnificent Casino (1878-1879) of Monte Carlo, where Garnier handled the unexpected combination of plaster façades and polychrome mosaic with astonishing virtuosity. This formal originality, while true to Garnier's artistic temperament, was somewhat excessive, and he was careful later to produce a more restrained effect in the rather disappointing casino in Vittel (1882; destr.) and in the admirable observatory in Nice (1879-1886).
