dc.description | Streetscape; Gordes is a mountain village in the Vaucluse département in Provence, France. Population: 2,100. The nearest city is Avignon. It was occupied by the Romans. In 1031, a castle was built. The castle was re-enforced in 1123 and partially rebuilt in Renaissance style in 1525. In the immediate vicinity of Gordes is the Romanesque Sénanque Abbey (a Cistercian abbey still inhabited by monks established 1148). All the buildings in Gordes are made of stone and use terracotta roof tiles. The streets are paved with stones. Source: Wikipedia; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page (accessed 7/5/2008) | en_US |
