Frontal view of south elevation of the stable buildings; The Chateau, one of the greatest French residences of the 17th century was designed as a backdrop for lavish entertainments and court functions: one of the requirements being suitable stabling for the care and housing of horses, horse drawn vehicles and staff. The outer forecourt beyond the moat is flanked by two vast courtyards of stables and service buildings in brick and stone, providing the architectural overture to the château and the huge formal gardens beyond.
