dc.description | Detail showing fan vaulting; The Divinity School is a beautiful medieval building and room in the Perpendicular Style, part of the University of Oxford. Built 1427-1483, it is the oldest surviving purpose-built building for university use, specifically for lectures and discussions on theology. The ceiling consists of very elaborate lierne vaulting with bosses carved with the initials or arms of those who contributed to the cost of the building. The building is physically attached to the Bodleian Library (Schools Quadrangle) and is also next to the Sheldonian Theatre where students gain their degrees. At the far end from the Bodleian Library entrance, a door leads to Convocation House (built 1634-1637). Source: Wikipedia; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page (accessed 7/14/2008) | en_US |
