Description
Baroness Marie-Thérèse Ullens de Schooten (1905-1989, Belgium) traveled widely over the course of her husband's diplomatic career, visiting Egypt in the 1920s and Iran in 1948, among other destinations. It was in Iran that Baroness Ullens met André and Yedda Godard during his tenure as head of the Royal Archaeological Service of Iran. However, it was her second trip in 1951, following the sudden death of her husband, which marked the start of Ullens's documentary work in Iran. She continued to work in Iran into the 1970s, and remained a lifelong friend of the Godards'.
In her audio recordings and her film work, Ullens focused on the Iranian nomadic tribes, notably the Qashqai (Kashkai), to whom she gained privileged access. Her experiences with the Qashqai are described at length in her book, "Lords of the Mountains: Southern Persia and the Kashkai tribe" (1956), and appear in several of the films in this collection.
In 1991, Baroness Ullens's work was donated to the Harvard Semitic Museum.
