Description
Gueliz, the "New Town" or European portion of Marrakech built during the colonial era takes is name from this building, "Gueliz" being a corruption of the French word "église," or "church." It was built in 1928 and named in honor of 5 Franciscan Monks beheaded for trying to convert Muslims in the 13th century. It is red like most of the city, with green roof tiles. Its bell tower is the second tallest building in the vicinity, its height exceeded only by the nearby minaret.
