A signed, sealed letter of appointment of Francois de Lalande to the position of astronomer at the Bureau des Longitude, with a note of explanation written in English. Signatures of the letter include some founding members of the Bureau, such as Jean-Charles de Borda, Jean-Nicolas Buache, J.L. Lagrange and P.S. Laplace.
