The triumphal arch to the south of the city, dedicated to Hadrian in ad 129–30, seems to have been associated with an enlargement southwards of the city that never took place. The arch and the contemporary new south gate both display some unorthodox, perhaps Nabataean, architectural features, such as acanthus bases (see Nabataea). exterior, 1983
