Cropped view of the top perspective, Porto di Ripetta; By 1703 Specchi was Architect of the Tribunale delle Strade, and he was commissioned by Pope Clement XI to design the Porto di Ripetta (1703-1704; destroyed), his most significant work of urban architecture. The Ripetta was a docking area on the left bank of the River Tiber in the centre of Rome intended to serve the Tiber's fertile upper reaches, which provided the city with wood, grain, oil and wine, as opposed to the Ripa Grande downstream, which served Ostia and the sea. Stone for the project was brought from the Colosseum, which had partly collapsed in an earthquake that year, and most of the construction was complete by May 1704. The port was demolished in the late 19th century to make way for the Tiber embankments beside the Ponte Cavour, but its appearance is known from various sources, including photographs.
