Overall frontal view; Roman copy, 1st century AD, of a Greek original of about 440 BC. This statue is sometimes called the Westmacott Athlete, after a former owner. It is thought to reproduce a bronze original made by the Greek sculptor Polykleitos, representing the young boxer Kyniskos, a champion at the Olympic Games. There are several other copies and variants of this subject, which was popular among Roman collectors. Source: British Museum [website]; http://www.britishmuseum.org (accessed 6/14/2009)
