View looking south on the square, with the GUM department store left, St Basil's Cathedral center, and the Kremlin walls right; Bove’s talent as an urban planner was revealed most fully in his work in developing the centre of Moscow, a homogeneous system of squares that connected with the historic centre, the Kremlin, which retained its predominant importance. By rebuilding the Trading Rows (1814-15; destr. 1895) in Red Square, Bove brilliantly solved the problem of including this classical building in the historically evolved ensemble of the ancient square bordered by the fortified walls of the Kremlin.
