View of a metro entrance; The Moscow Metro which spans almost the entire Russian capital, is the world's second most heavily used rapid-transit system. Opened in 1935, it is well known for the ornate design of many of its stations, which contain outstanding examples of socialist realist art. The stations of Moscow's subway system have often been called "the people's palaces", for their elegant designs and lavish and profuse use of marble, mosaics, sculptures and chandeliers. Dushkyn (Aleksey Dushkin) was a major architect of the first phase of building. Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.oxfordartonline.com/ (accessed 6/22/2009)
