South wing, frontal view; Kavos’s main work, however, was the construction of theatres. In 1843 he restored the unusual wooden theatre on Stone Island (Kamenny ostrov), and in 1847-1848 he built a theatre-cum-circus on Theatre (Teatral’naya) Square and restored it in 1859-1860 after a fire. The Renaissance Revival façade and the interiors of the theatre, now known as the Mariinsky or Kirov, were altered (1883-1886) by Viktor Shreter. [It is known abroad as the Kirov, and locally as the Mariinskiy.] Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.oxfordartonline.com/ (accessed 1/16/2009)
