Overall view of the sculpture; One of the most popular sculptors with the court and the aristocracy during the reign of Emperor Charles VI was Lorenzo Mattielli (ca. 1682-1748) from Vicenza, who had trained with Orazio Marinali. Mattielli created fine garden sculpture (1719-1724) for the Schwarzenberg Palace in Vienna and also received numerous ecclesiastical commissions, including the main parts of the sculptural decoration (1725-1726) of the front façade of the Karlskirche in Vienna. He also designed the statues (1731) on the high altar of the church of Melk Abbey. Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.oxfordartonline.com/ (accessed 7/16/2010)
