Baroque facade, added ca. 1729; The design of S Maria della Passione, Milan, begun by 1486, is generally attributed to Battaggio. It was centrally planned, a domed octagon in shape, with quadrangular apsed chapels on the main axes and semicircular ones on the oblique sides, in a florid version of Bramante’s Milanese style. Cristoforo Lombardo designed the octagonal lantern, which he worked on in 1550-1551. The nave was added by Martino Bassi between 1573 and 1591, transforming the earlier Greek-cross church into a Latin-cross plan with a broad nave and two side aisles with semicircular chapels. Facade sculpture (1692-1729) was designed by Giuseppe Rusnati. Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.oxfordartonline.com/ (accessed 7/14/2010)
