dc.description | West side, detail of sculpture; Doménech y Montaner is considered one of the protagonists of Catalan architectural Modernism, which is characterized by rationalism, and which contrasted with the more expressionist Modernism headed by Gaudí. One of his first works was a building for the Editorial Montaner y Simón (1880). With J. Puig i Cadafalch, he was the director of the Montaner i Simon publishing company in Barcelona from 1886-1897. Modernisme is the Catalan name for Art Nouveau. [The building is now Fundació Antoni Tàpies. Antoni Tàpies created the sculpture crowning the building entitled Núvol i cadira (Cloud and Chair, 1990). This sculpture represents a chair jutting out of a large cloud. The chair, a recurring motif in Tàpies' works, alludes to a meditative attitude and to aesthetic contemplation.] Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.oxfordartonline.com/ (accessed 7/13/2010) | en_US |
