Description
"Like the 16th century Badi palace at Marrakesh, this complex was itself a town--typical of the royal palaces added by the North African rulers to their cities. In a vast space numerous buildings are grouped around rectangular courts. Built partly over colossal substructures, they were used as barracks, stables, olive presses, grain siols and prisons, in addition to the more usual residential and administrative functions. The whole was protected by a triple wall, the outer reinforced with square bastions, the inner defending the palace. Immense reservoirs providing water for the extensive royal gardens were also part of this complex." [Michell] plan (drawing), drawn by Keith Turner
