Alternative Title
Philip IV (1605–1665), King of Spain
Date
1619-1629Description
This work dates from Velázquez's first years at the Spanish court, and is apparently a portrait of the King for which the artist signed a receipt on December 4, 1624. Though it has sometimes been regarded as a workshop replica of a lost original, it is more probably a damaged autograph picture. The painting was commissioned by the widow of Don García Pérez de Araciel, one of the King's counsellors. The state of preservation is sound, save for the left side of the sitter's face. The left eye is restored. (Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC, website; 11/3/2003) full view
