160-169Description
Inside the south gate are the visible remains of the Temple of Zeus, in the Corinthian order, which dates to the 160s ad but which superseded earlier cult buildings dating to the Hellenistic and early Roman period. Certainly the temenos and the stairs up from the valley date to the earlier 1st century ad. Next to the temple is the large, partially restored southern theatre (late 1st century ad), with a seating capacity of c. 3000. North-east of the temple and the theatre lies the Oval Piazza (1st century ad), a paved area surrounded by an Ionic colonnade filling in a natural valley. From here the city’s finely paved cardo leads off to the north. exterior, 1983
