"For example, in Yard, first presented at the Martha Jackson Gallery in New York as part of the groundbreaking group exhibition "Environments, Situations, Spaces," Kaprow created an allover field of used tires in the tight confines of the backyard of a Manhattan townhouse; the work existed as an entity only when audience members activated it by walking through the piece. Although these audience members were encouraged to believe that they were playing, Kaprow had in fact established very controlled parameters within which they had to act." installation view
