Detail, top half of sculpture; Shantinath was the sixteenth (of 24 total) Jain Tirthankar (Tirthankara) of the present age (Avasarpini). According to Jain beliefs, he became a siddha, a liberated soul which has destroyed all of its karma. Shantinath was born to King Viswasen Raja and Queen Achira Rani at Hastinapur in the Ikshvaku clan. His birth date is the thirteen day of the Jyest Krishna month of the Indian calendar. From Veraval during the Western Chalukya dynasty, also known as the Solanki in Gujurat. The date 1138 marks the death of Somesvara III and ascension of Jagadhekamalla II.
