Parvati as Maheshwari
Date
1000-1099Description
Overall view from front; giving the Abhaya mudra with right lower hand and Varada mudra with left lower; top hands hold the sula and noose; Parvati is the Hindu goddess of love, fertility and devotion; she is the wife and consort of the Hindu deity Shiva. When depicted alone she is frequently shown with four arms. She has many named aspects; as Maheshwari, she is the 'great goddess'. The statue is from Tirukkodikkaval, Undivided Thanjavur District. Here she is seated on a lotus pedestal with the left leg bent and right leg hanging down, wearing a jatamakuta with crescent moon on the right side and cassia flower and snake on the left side. The upper pair of arms bear sula and noose. The lower pair of arms give the abhaya and varada mudras.
