1690Description
Detail of middle tile with rococo figures and urn; The decoration on these plaques (manufactured in Delft) was based on designs by Daniël Marot I, who worked as principal designer to William of Orange and also worked at William and Mary's court in England (1694-1697). The designs were not executed on the more usual smaller tiles, but on larger planes. Making such large plaques must have represented an enormous technical challenge. Each column was originally four or four and-a-half plaques high. Source: Rijksmuseum [website]; www.rijksmuseum.nl/en (accessed 5/19/2015)
