Exterior, the end of the northeast wing with arcade and side door; An historic adobe house constructed by José Antonio Estudillo for his father José María Estudillo, commandant of the Presidio of San Diego. In 1827 Estudillo built a large L-shaped adobe house for his father on land granted by Governor José María de Echeandía. The adobe was later enlarged and became U-shaped. It was considered one of the finest homes in Alta California. The house is still standing and is one of the oldest surviving buildings in California. It is located in Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, and is designated a National Historic Landmark in its own right. The Estudillo family lived there until 1887. The house was obtained by the State of California in 1968, was restored to its original condition, and is now a museum open to the public.
