Diagonal walkway that cuts though circular garden planted with native grasses; The Frères-Charon plaza was first built in the XVII century in an industrial center by Charon brothers, where the center of interest was a windmill, which was demolished in 1840. In this new project the team of designers marked the circle of the old mill base on the site by using a different pavement. A varied palette of colored lights illuminates the plaza when the sun goes down; the reflection on the native grasses gives a fairy tale effect. The project uses a simple, refined, and minimalist architectural language to create a dialogue between circular and cylindrical forms including the garden of wild grasses, the shape of the absent windmill and a park pavilion in the form of a belvedere-folly (which hides a service stair for sewer access). The city organized a interdisciplinary design team including an artist (Raphaëlle de Groot), lighting engineer (Gilles Arpin), the architect (Gavin Affleck), and a landscape architect (Robert Desjardins).
