| dc.description | Detail, top of folding glass wall system; The California Academy of Sciences is a natural history museum. The primary building in Golden Gate Park was completely rebuilt in 2008. The Terrace was built with oversight and approval from Renzo Piano, the architect of the new Academy building. Admission to the Academy is required in order to access The Terrace, which is located in the Academy's West Garden, amidst sculptures by Maya Lin. To emphasize the "lightness" of the steel and glass box (with two sliding glass walls), the structural beams are recessed into the roof assembly and thin titanium rods are utilized, contributing to a thin roof profile and airy feel. Skylights and blue shadowboxes made of recycled resin recall a bright blue sky even on foggy days. The height of the building was determined by the tallest frameless glass door system (11 feet, 4 inches) obtainable, a custom system that glides along a recessed track set in the ceiling.
