Cutaway view into interior with choir loft / balcony at left; Breuer maintained his interest in textural contrast and his fondness for Corbusian pilotis; however, after World War II he suffered a loss of direction, and his work was at times overblown and unconvincing. His religious buildings, such as the St. Francis de Sales church (ca. 1964-1966), Muskegon, MI, are often strenuously modern, relying on feats of engineering to create excitement. The church and rectory were done in partnership with Herbert Beckhard. This model of the church is owned by the Cranbrook Museum of Art, and was part of the Michigan Modern: Design That Shaped America exhibition (2013-2014).
