Overall view without frame; This pendant portrays the wife of Lucas de Clercq. Spouses were customarily depicted separately, the husband on the left and the wife on the right, both turned towards each other. The light almost always came from the left, illuminating the face of the woman evenly, and casting striking shadows on that of the man. Hals portrayed the woman, as was usual, in a more static pose than that of the man. Source: Rijksmuseum [website]; www.rijksmuseum.nl/en (accessed 5/30/2014)
