Stairs to access bridge ramp; The bridge was renamed (from passerelle Solférino) after Léopold Sédar Senghor on 9 October 2006 on the centenary of his birth. It is a pedestrian footbridge across the Seine in the 7th arrondissement of Paris. The first bridge on this site was opened in 1861, replaced in 1961 by a steel footbridge demolished in its turn in 1992. Crossing the Seine with a single span and no piers, this steel bridge is architecturally unique and covered in exotic woods (Tabebuias, a Brazilian tree also used for outdoor flooring at the Bibliothèque nationale de France) which gives it a light and warm appearance. The steel supports are six 150 tonne components built by the Eiffel engineering company, Eiffel Constructions métalliques. The concrete pilings at either end are sunk 15 meters into the ground. Its innovative architecture brought Marc Mimram the award "Prix de l'Équerre d'Argent" for the year 1999. Source: Wikipedia; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page (accessed 7/4/2014)en_US
