Detail, dedication plaque; Though it does exhibit some of his trademark expressionism, the statue of Wolfe Tone is less abstract than was most of his work at the time (1967). However it makes no attempt at an exact likeness; it marks a transition from memorial to public art. Wolfe Tone (1763-1798) was a leading Irish revolutionary figure and one of the founding members of the United Irishmen and is regarded as the father of Irish Republicanism. The stone wall divides the Tone statue from the Famine Memorial. Source: Wikipedia; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page (accessed 6/6/2012)en_US
