dc.description | Exterior side of building, looking north; Herbert Newman established his first firm in 1964, located in New Haven CT. In 1990 the firm name was Herbert Newman Associates AIA, P.C.; it is now Newman Architects LLC. From their website: "Williams College is a predominantly red brick and stone campus adjoined by a neighborhood of large white clapboard houses, many of them also part of the college. The Center is itself a house, a setting for activities that are religious, scholarly, and familial. Following in the tradition of vernacular New England religious architecture, the Jewish Religious Center is a wooden building painted white and given monumental scale by a dominant vertical element. Again, following the vernacular, the interior is painted white." The building contains a sanctuary, dining room and library.
