Detail of head and arms from below left; Formerly from the Borghese Collection, Rome, originally on the facade of the Villa Borghese. In 1807, Napoleon I bought the collection for the Louvre from his brother-in-law, Prince Camillo Borghese (1775–1832). The antique head did not originally belong to the statue, and the arms are modern. The body is wrapped in a buttoned tunic of red porphyry that was reworked in the modern period, probably by Lorenzo Nizza in 1616.
