Detail, sculpture on left of portal; According to legend, the church of Notre-Dame du Taur was built in the exact spot where the body of Saint Saturnin (Sernin) broke away from the bull that dragged him (the form of his martyrdom). The church is located in the Rue du Taur between the Place du Capitole and the Basilica of St. Sernin. Saint Saturnin was the first bishop of Toulouse. A chapel was first installed for pilgrims on the exact place of his death. The saint's relics were moved to the Basilica of St. Sernin and this church was built over the original pilgrims chapel. The façade on the Rue du Taur dates from XIV - XVI centuries and continues the tradition of Southern Gothic. Source: Wikipedia; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page (accessed 5/18/2011)
