Detail, facades near the boundary of Place des Carmes; Les Carmes ('the Carmelites') is a district organized around an old hall market, now converted to paid parking. It is an old district, crossed by the Roman cardo (north-south). The market, named after Victor Hugo, had cast iron supported shelters over it (1892); this was demolished and replaced by an open square with concrete parking by the architect Galinier (1963). The district contains Rue des Filatiers where the home of Jean Calas (1698-1762) is located. Source: Wikipedia; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page (accessed 5/17/2011)
