Inscribed, lower left rim: "R.MUTT / 1917"This second version of Fountain appeared when Duchamp agreed to participate in an exhibition entitled "Challenge and Defy" which Sidney Janis was organizing for fall 1950...Duchamp looked for a suitable replacement [for Fountain], and finding none, he asked Janis to look for a urinal that closely resembled the original during an upcoming trip to Europe. Janis...found and purchased a urinal at a flea market on the outskirts of Paris. Duchamp approved the choice, signed the urinal "R. Mutt, 1917", and submitted it for exhibit in "Challenge and Defy."
