Theater, a base standing in the orchestra, depicting the tripod cauldron and reliefs of griffins (first erected in the 4C BCE the present theater is the result of Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine additions); Located near the mouth of the Menderes; was one of 12 Ionian cities & one of the greatest cities of ancient Asia Minor; was large trade center with 4 harbors; founded colonies on Black Sea, in Egypt & Italy; noted as a literary center.
