dc.description | Context view, showing the two octagonal mausoleum at left and a square one on the far right, with grave markers in the foreground; The enclosed cemetery on the qibla (Mecca side of the mosque), contains two octagonal mausoleums, one for Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent and the other for his wife Hürrem (Roxelana). Both were designed by the architect Sinan in 1566. Hürrem died on April 18, 1558. She is buried in a domed mausoleum (türbe) decorated in exquisite Iznik tiles depicting the garden of paradise. Her mausoleum is adjacent to Süleyman's, a separate and more somber domed structure. Source: Wikipedia; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page (accessed 1/6/2008) | en_US |
