View of the iron stairs, bridge and clock, west wall of the west shed; The front elevation of the terminal building could be treated in different ways: as a solid block, for example in London in the Gothic Revival hotel front of St Pancras Station (1873-1876), by George Gilbert I Scott (ii) and the Renaissance Revival Charing Cross Station (1863-1864), by E. M. Barry; or overlaid with historicist or symbolic detailing to convey the idea of a city gate, such as at the Eastern Station (1881), Budapest, designed by Julius Röchlitz (1827-1886). The most significant innovation for the building type, however, was the integration of the facade with the train-shed behind it, resulting in a wide arch over the centre of the facade, as at François Duquesney's Gare de l'Est (1847-1852), Paris, King's Cross Station (1852), London, designed by Lewis Cubitt (1799-1883), and the Stazione Porta Nuova (1866-1868), Turin, by Carlo Ceppi and Alessandro Mazzuchetti.
