General view; Peace on Earth incorporates themes and motifs that Lipchitz had been exploring for 20 years. The knotted masses at the base represent prima materia, the raw matter from which all things emerge. Progressing upward are depicted: the Lamb of God, angels, the Virgin Mary and ultimately the Holy Spirit, in the traditional form of a dove. Peace on Earth is an optimistic work expressing the transformation of flesh into spirit. Its broader, underlying theme of metamorphosis occupied Lipchitz throughout his career.
