View into the loggia of the Palazzo del Podestà, view of vaults; The Torre Rognosa ('Scabby Tower') of the Palazzo del Podestà (1255), the oldest surviving civic building, is 51 m high. The plain façade of the neighbouring Palazzo del Popolo (1288), to which belongs the Torre Grossa (1311; h. 54 m), belies its former splendour, since it was once inlaid with glazed terracotta arms of successive Podestà. Its present austerity complements the façade (1239) of the Collegiata Pieve (S Maria Assunta), consecrated in 1148. These buildings, grouped around the Piazza del Duomo, mark the town centre.
