Detail, depicting lower storey window; [The King's coat of arms above the main entrance is a copy of a work by Pierre Puget exhibited in the Musee des Beaux-Arts. Marseille's council has met here since the Middle Ages. Today, it houses the offices of the mayor, municipal councillors and other administrative offices.] In the late 17th century and throughout the 18th there was extensive urban planning. Public buildings were either enlarged or newly built and decorated including the Hôtel de Ville (rebuilt 1666-1670) and the arsenal, both by Gaspard Puget (1615-ca. 1683). Pierre Puget produced two alternative schemes (drawings) for the rebuilding of the Hôtel-de-Ville. Neither project was built, although Gaspard Puget directed the reconstruction of the Hôtel-de-Ville from 1666-1670 and is generally considered to have been its architect.
