Distant general view of Chateau du Barroux; In 1538, in settlement of a debt, the 12th century castle became the property of Henri de Rovigliasc, earl of Veynes. At the height of the Renaissance, he transformed the military, uninhabitable stronghold into a superb residence. Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban, Marshal of France under King Louis XIV; added more fortifications to the site in 1680-1690. The site was abandoned in 1793 and suffered centuries of neglect. Restorations began in 1960. Modern Barroux is a small village of just over 500 inhabitants.
